100 Reasons people are rage-closing your website

I was scrolling Threads last week when I came across a post asking a simple question:
"what do you actually hate about websites?"
The replies went OFF.
As a web designer working with small businesses every day, I wasn't surprised by what came back. The replies did not disappoint. We're talking thousands of likes, hundreds of responses, and a whole lot of shared web design red flags. I went down a Threads rabbit hole so you don't have to.
I collated everything, cut the duplicates, sectioned them and added a few of my own (as someone who builds these things for a living). This led to a list of 100 reasons people are rage-closing browser tabs every single day.
From pop-ups to pixelated images, here are 100, universal, website mistakes that are costing businesses real money every single day. Is yours on the list?

Annoying
Any type of pop-ups. And if you absolutely MUST, at least make the "X" button visible.
“Spin the wheel” discounts.
Showing “just purchased” or “X amount of other people have this in their cart right now” Nobody believes you.
“Going out of business” click bait, I'm sure you closed last year as well?
Everything on sale, always. It just means that nothing is.
Too many “announcements”. I don't care.
Headers that stay with the scroll. Be gone.
The live chat bubble that sits over your content on mobile and can't be moved. SO annoying.
Anything that involves signing up for texts.
Sign up before you can even look around. Immediate exit.
Countdown timers that reset every time you reload the page. We know.
Forms that clear all your answers if you miss one field.
Auto-playing audio. An actual hate crime.
Too much text. Get to the point.
Cookie banners that make "reject all" basically impossible to find but "accept all" is a big green button.
Information frustrations
Contact Us page that's just a form. Where's the email? The number?
Contact form that wants my mobile number. I'm buying a candle, not a mortgage.
No listed business location (shipping and taxes clarity?)
Prices on demand / call to enquire (just tell me!) NO prices at all = I'm not asking.
The word “from” on pricing (I'd be more interested in “up to”)
Obvious AI (because honestly👀 its not X its Y 👀 no fluff 👀you're quietly👀 killing your business)
Blog that hasn't been posted to since 2021. Either commit or remove it.
A terms and conditions page that's clearly been copied from another business and still has their name in it. Yes, people notice.
A FAQ page that doesn't actually answer the questions people are asking. If you're getting the same enquiry repeatedly, it goes on the FAQ.
Your website tells me absolutely NOTHING about what you do / sell / offer.
Links in bio that go to a landing page that hasn't been updated since the last launch.
Booking or enquiry button that goes nowhere or errors out. You had one job.
No clear call to action. I've read everything and I still don't know what you want me to do next.
Everywhere you look it screams template and nothing has been customised. Your brand deserves better.
Contact page with no response time expectation. Am I waiting 2 hours or 2 weeks?
Website copy that reads like it was written for Google, not for humans.
No "back to you" energy anywhere. Every page talks at me, nothing asks me anything or invites me in.
Trust Murderers
No policies 🚩
Fake client feedback. You literally can write whatever you want so I'm not buying it. Show me a Google Review that's legit.
See 5, but also: Testimonials with no surname, no photo, no context. "Sarah, UK" means nothing.
Signs that the site hasn’t been updated (e.g Easter deals still live in Summer)
"Coming soon" pages that have been coming soon for two years
Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Kills trust instantly.
Email address still on Gmail. It's £10 a year, sort it out.
Misaligned text / images. Basics.
"As seen in" logos that are clearly just publications anyone can submit to for free.
Follower counts or subscriber numbers that clearly haven't moved in years. Static social proof is worse than none.
UX (User Experience) Disasters
Not mobile optimised (also iPad - but web designers know that's another story)
No obvious navigation. I don't need google maps, but a button for the shop is helpful (as a minimum).
Can't find links to every page from the homepage.
If I have to click more than twice to get to where I want - I'm out.
Logo not linked to the homepage. Classic.
No back to top button.
No search bar.
Too many pages💤
Too many fonts. Two, maximum. Three if you're feeling very brave.
Small fonts. Not everyone is 22 with perfect vision.
Too much animation. Titles don't need to dance I'm sorry.
Neon colours. Anything that makes you squint.
Not optimised for dark mode.
Videos embedded on the page. They slow everything down. Just link your TikTok.
Hosting ads on your own site.
Slow loading. If it takes more than 3 seconds, half your visitors are already gone.
Browser tab with no favicon. Screams unfinished.
404 pages with no redirect or helpful navigation back to homepage.
Broken links. Everywhere. Does nobody check them?
A copyright footer that's three years out of date. Tiny detail, massively unprofessional.
When the whole site feels like it was built once, launched, and never thought about again. Your website is not a business card. It is a living thing. Treat it like one.
No breadcrumb trail on deeper pages. I don't know where I am or how I got here.
Links that look like buttons and buttons that look like links. Pick a lane.
Product Problems
AI photos of products (get graphic design mock-ups instead)
No size guide. A size 12 is different everywhere and you know it.
Clothing items given a gender and a personality. "She is the bag of the season." No.
No fabric or material information.
No information on how to access digital downloads.
No ingredients or allergen details on food products.
Lack of diversity in clothing models. The 90's ended.
No FAQ page for a product or service with obvious questions.
Product photos that are all the same angle. Show me the back, the label, something for scale.
Stock images. You have a phone. (Also pixelated images? It's 2026, grow up).
A services page that lists what you do but not who it's for. I need to see myself in it.
Checked out checkouts
Unrealistic shipping costs. We know it's spenny and you don't want to pay for it, but also not up funding your beach house.
Limited payment options. Why don't people take AMEX? We want our points.
No buy now, pay later. Klarna exists for a reason. I beg.
A site with no SSL certificate a.k.a No🔒in the URL bar? Run.
No order confirmation email (or it goes straight to spam and they never fix it).
Checkout that times out and clears your basket. I will never come back.
Discount code field that's broken or only works on full-price items.
No estimated delivery date at checkout.
No guest checkout.
No shopping filters (we obviously wanna see what the cheapest thing is first).
No wish-list option. I may be broke today but payday is tomorrow🤷🏻♀️
Out of stock / booked with no restock date / pre-order / wait list option. Just disappointment tbh,
No "you might also like." You're leaving money on the table.
Bundle deals that are actually more expensive than buying individually if you do the math.
Postage calculated at the very last step of checkout with no warning. Bait and switch energy.
Personal Content Icks
Too much “who I am” and not enough “what I can do for you".
No photo on a personal brand site. Who am I buying from?
"Babe" "Hun", girly-pop language. It is not the vibe you think it is.
Over-personalised about pages. I do not need to know about your knit club if I'm buying accountancy services.
The CEO vanity project energy. Where you can feel someone's ego in every paragraph.
No social links. If I like you, I want to find you everywhere.
"Award winning" with no mention of what award, when, or who gave it.
Portfolio or case studies that are all years old. What have you done lately?
Slagging off clients/customers. If you make me think you hate me in your text then why on earth am I working with you / buying from you?
Worse than you anticipated, isn't it? Some of these are quick fixes. Some need a proper look at your site strategy. I clocked about 3 that I need to sort myself. Either way, if more than 10 of these are you right now, that's worth a conversation. You know where I am 👀
